Byron Evans – passed away

We received the very sad message this morning from Peg Evans that her husband Byron Evans, passed away yesterday evening. She was with him when it happened, and fortunately her daughter Catherine and son David with their spouses were also present and supported her.

All of us had a very special relationship with Byron and his death touches us deeply. I assured Peg of GST’s deepest sympathy, prayers and appreciation of what Byron with Peg on his side did in God’s Kingdom, and particularly then for GST.

We would like to congratulate prof Heilna du Plooy with the publication of another book: Writing from heart to heart. Letters of Elize Botha.
Compiled by Heilna Plooy
This book is a compilation of selected letters written to and by prof. Elize Botha, renowned Afrikaans literary scholar and public figure. Elize Botha was a central figure in Afrikaans literary circles from the 1960’s until her death in 2007. For almost twenty years she was the editor in chief of The Literary Journal, the official mouthpiece of the Afrikaans Literary Circle of Afrikaans writers since the 1930’s. In this capacity, and as academic scholar, she corresponded with many writers, poets, novelists and dramatists. She also regularly wrote to literary-minded friends, academic colleagues, students and other lovers of literature. People also loved writing to her. She commanded respect on account of her intelligence and stature but her warm and outgoing personality made her popular and beloved. She regarded the writing of letters as conversing in a reflective mood. This was one of the ways in which she and her correspondents discussed literature from all over the world, because the writers of these letters were all exceptionally widely read. The collection of letters provides insight into Elize’s personality as a literary scholar and friend whereas she became known in public life as the first female Chairperson of the South African Academy for Arts and Science, the first female member of the board of directors of NB, the largest media house in Southern Africa, and as the first female Chancellor of the University of Stellenbosch. These letters contain many facts of literary and historical importance which would not and are not accommodated in official or academic literary histories, but ultimately these conversations between book lovers and committed readers of good literature make wonderful reading.
